The benefits of an organic mattress go beyond a good night’s sleep. For that reason, we tested over a dozen eco-minded options with our team of 13 panelists to find the best organic mattresses that offer a cleaner, more sustainable sleep environment. After thorough evaluations, we named the Avocado Green Mattress the best organic mattress overall. It’s a comfortable and breathable innerspring model that accommodates a wide range of sleeper types, and it has an impressive list of eco-friendly certifications that reflect its green, organic roots. As you peruse, keep in mind that fully organic mattresses are relatively uncommon, as many “natural” materials lack the rigorous certifications required to be labeled genuinely organic.
After testing a dozen beds, the Avocado Green is our top pick for the best organic mattress of 2026.

Why We Named It Best Overall
The Avocado Green Mattress earned the title of best organic mattress overall because every detail is made with sustainability in mind. The mattress sports an impressive number of eco-conscious certifications—including the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS), Made Safe, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and UL Greenguard Gold—each reflecting a commitment to organic sourcing, low emissions and reduced exposure to harmful substances. What’s more, Avocado’s working toward becoming Fair Trade Certified, meaning the factories assembling its mattress adhere to strict standards for safe working conditions, fair wages and ethical labor practices—empowering workers and supporting community development.
How It Performed During Testing
The Avocado Green Mattress comes in three different firmness levels (plush, medium and firm) to suit different sleepers’ needs. During testing, we found the firm model to be supportive with a buoyant feel. “The Avocado Green keeps my hips lifted and in line with my shoulders, while the latex and thick cover provide a gentle touch,” says deputy sleep and wellness editor, Bridget Chapman.
The Avocado Green Mattress is made with eco-friendly, sustainably sourced materials and has three firmness level options.
JAMIE UEDA FOR FORBES
Our testing found the firm model to be a good choice for stomach and back sleepers who like a supportive feel; the medium model to be best for back, side and combination sleepers; and the plush model to be ideal for side sleepers and those who need extra pressure relief. After testing the plush box-top model, Chapman says, “I feel really comfortable while side sleeping. The latex isn’t quite as conforming as memory foam where you deeply sink into it, but it’s soft and does a good job cradling the hip and shoulder.” It’s worth noting the medium and plush models do come at an additional cost.

Why We Named It Best For Combination Back And Stomach Sleepers
The Birch Natural Mattress checks three essential boxes for combination sleepers: it has a versatile medium-firm feel, buoyant support and good ease of movement. In other words, it can accommodate both back and stomach sleeping, and lets you comfortably shift between the two. Like the Avocado Green Mattress, this option from Birch is made with UL Greenguard Gold– and GOLS-certified materials, meaning it’s made without harmful chemicals and substances. Its cotton cover and wool layer (which is not certified organic) add a touch of comfort and breathability, while its organic latex and core of up to 1,000 individually wrapped coils offer substantial support and pressure relief.
The Birch Natural Mattress is ideal for combination sleepers because of its balanced feel.

How It Performed During Testing
Our testers rated the Birch Natural Mattress an 8.5 out of 10 for back sleeping and an 8 out of 10 for side and stomach sleeping, and they all praised its responsive feel. “It is relatively easy to move around on this mattress, and I don’t sink down or get stuck,” says one tester under 150 pounds. A tester in our mid-weight category (150 to 250 pounds) adds, “I had no issues getting from one side to the other or tossing and turning.” While the hybrid Nolah Natural was a close runner-up for back and stomach sleepers, our testers didn’t score its features as high as the Birch Natural Mattress. The Birch also scored well for some side sleepers, but if you’re a strict side sleeper, the Birch Luxe Natural Mattress is a better choice due to its softer feel.

Why We Named It Best Value
Silk & Snow is known for its premium home, bedding and furniture catalog, and we especially love its Organic Mattress for being a high-quality choice at a great value. It’s made with high-end materials, including GOLS-certified latex and GOTS-certified cotton and wool, yet the standard model retails at hundreds of dollars less than competing high-end organic mattresses. The exact construction depends on the firmness level you choose: plush, medium-firm or firm.
The Silk & Snow Organic Mattress is made with quality materials and often runs for under $1,000 (for a queen).

How It Performed During Testing
Our team tried the medium-firm model, and it strikes a nice balance in the middle of the firmness spectrum. “It falls right down the middle in a lot of ways—there’s moderate sinkage and cushioning, but not enough to call it downright plush,” says one tester. “But it does feel nice, like something you’d find at a four-star hotel.” Our team rated the medium-firm model an 8 out of 10 for side sleepers and an 8.5 out of 10 for back sleepers, making it a comfortable pick for these sleep positions and those who want soft cushioning with ample support. On the other hand, strict stomach sleepers should consider the firm model, while dominant side sleepers—especially those under 150 pounds—may prefer the plush option for more pressure relief. Also adding to its overall value, the mattress scored well for edge support, motion isolation and ease of movement.

Why We Named It Best For Side Sleepers
The Amerisleep Organica does a good job at cushioning sensitive joints and eliminating much of the stress placed on the hips and shoulders. Plus, it comes in two firmnesses (plush and medium), both of which are great options for side sleepers. As for its eco-consciousness, the latex used inside the mattress is certified by the Rainforest Alliance and Eco-Institut, meaning that it’s sustainably produced, while both the latex and the wool hold an Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification, indicating that they’ve been tested for harmful substances. Unlike other mattresses in this guide, though, the Amerisleep Organica doesn’t currently hold a GOTS or GOLS certification to substantiate its organic claims.
The Organica mattress from Amerisleep has a softer, more cushioned feel than the other organic beds we tested.

How It Performed During Testing
We found even the medium model of the Amerisleep Organica to have a softer profile than most latex hybrid mattresses we’ve tested. Our side-sleeping testers rated it a 9 out of 10 for this sleep posture, as it’s cushy enough to cradle your knees, hips and shoulders but supportive enough to keep you in proper alignment. “This is definitely a favorite of mine, and a great choice for those who prefer soft or soft-to-medium mattresses,” says one tester under 150 pounds. A tester in the 250-pound-and-up weight class adds, “I feel like my hips are sinking into the top to the perfect depth for my spine to straighten out. It’s so cushiony at first, with solid support beneath.” For maximum pressure relief and sinkage, though, we recommend the Amerisleep Organica in the plush firmness.

Why We Named It Best For Back Pain
The Botanical Bliss Organic Latex Mattress from PlushBeds features a host of natural and organic materials similar to our top pick, the Avocado Green Mattress, including GOTS-certified cotton and wool, and GOLS-certified latex layers. Unlike a few of the other best organic mattresses, though, you don’t have to pay more for a softer model, and it has a high level of customization. You can choose between two firmness levels (medium or medium-firm) and three different heights (9, 10 or 12 inches).
With a medium-firm profile, strong foam design and cushioned topper, the Botanical Bliss mattress is an ideal pick for those with back pain.
JAMES RANSOM FOR FORBES
How It Performed During Testing
We tested the medium model and found it to skew a little firmer. It offers great alignment and cushioning for back and stomach sleepers, scoring a 9 and 8 out of 10 for the two categories, respectively. “After a brief pause, I found my trunk and shoulder blades finding their level, with ample support for the area in between,” says one of our testers weighing over 250 pounds. “It’s a good back sleeper’s bed, and my spine feels happy,” a lightweight sleeper adds. “My lower back, which is typically sensitive when I lie on my stomach, does not feel uncomfortable while lying down.” That being said, heavy back and stomach sleepers with back pain can opt for the medium-firm model for better spinal reinforcement. Several of our testers enjoyed it for side sleeping, too, but those under 150 pounds found it to be too firm.

It features a zoned coil system for targeted lumbar support along with GOLS-certified Dunlop latex and GOTS-certified wool and cotton. The coils promote neutral spinal alignment, while the latex provides pressure relief. The My Green Mattress also carries UL Greenguard Gold and Made Safe certifications to show it’s made without harmful chemicals.

Our testers scored it an 8 out of 10 for side sleeping and an 8.5 out of 10 for back and stomach sleepers. Testers also scored it an 8 out of 10 for overall pressure relief, while describing its overall feel as light and bouncy. “I think this is a no-frills, medium-firm mattress that’s most suitable for a variety of sleepers who want an organic option,” says one of our testers. We also scored it highly for motion isolation and edge support, so couples staying the night should find it deadens each other’s movements and can be comfortable sharing a full- or queen-size bed if they’re pushed to the edge.

Why We Named It Best Hybrid
The Naturepedic EOS Classic Customizable Organic Mattress is one of the most customizable hybrid mattresses on the market—without treading into smart bed territory—while maintaining an eco-friendly and organic design. You can choose from five different firmness levels: plush, medium, cushion-firm, firm and extra-firm—and you can choose a different firmness for each side of the bed for larger sizes. Naturepedic also lets you customize the feel of your mattress by rearranging its comfort layers. Within the first 100 days, you can swap them out with the brand until you find your ideal fit. That said, similar to the Turmerry Mattress, assembly is required for this bed, but you can pay extra to have it set up for you and to have your old mattress removed.

After adjusting its profile to be on the firm end of the spectrum, one heavyweight tester says, “There’s even support top to bottom, and it offers just enough midsection sink to leave the spine in alignment. After a few minutes, I was like a floating board, which felt very nice.” Along with choosing individual firmness, couples should appreciate this bed’s superior motion isolation and edge support (testers scored both a 9 out of 10). Although latex hybrid beds are known for being bouncy, “this bed has great motion isolation,” says one tester. “It feels super solid and stable,” they add, after rating this category a 9 out of 10.

Why We Named It Best For Hot Sleepers
Hot sleepers need a mattress that keeps them cool and curbs the dreaded night sweats. While most latex mattresses naturally sleep cooler than their memory foam counterparts, our favorite organic mattress for hot sleepers is the Saatva Latex Hybrid Mattress. It’s made with cotton, wool, GOLS-certified organic latex and recycled steel coils, and is Eco-Institut and UL Greenguard Gold certified. The combination of the bed’s moisture-wicking, eco-friendly materials and breathable coil base makes the Saatva Latex Hybrid Mattress cooler than many other organic mattresses we tested.

“It’s slightly cool to the touch, but in a natural way,” says one of our testers. “And the perforation on the surface helps provide great airflow.” Mattress and sleep editor McKenzie Dillon adds, “I also think it regulates temperature well because of its latex design, which is naturally breathable and good at stopping heat retention.” Cooling abilities aside, the Saatva Latex Hybrid Mattress also tested well for responsiveness (9 out of 10) and support. “Its buoyant feel makes it easy to move around on,” says Chapman. “I found it to have a slightly firmer feel overall, which is most comfortable while back or stomach sleeping. It also showed strong edge support, so you can sit or sleep near the edge of the bed without issue.”
Turmerry

Type: Latex foam | Organic certifications: GOLS | Brand firmness rating: Soft, medium, firm, extra-firm; medium/firm (double-sided) and firm/extra-firm (double-sided) | Trial: 120 nights | Warranty: 20 years
Best for:
- Back and stomach sleepers
- Sleepers who weigh under 250 pounds
- Those looking for little to no sinkage
- You want the option between firmness levels and heights
Skip if:
- You want strong edge support
- You don’t want to assemble your mattress
Why We Named It Best Firm
Latex tends to have a supportive and lifted feel, but the Turmerry Organic Latex Mattress is our top choice because of its firm and extra-firm profile options. These profiles provide maximum support and a seven-zone design that offers targeted relief and spinal reinforcement. Unlike other models on this list, the Turmerry arrives in four compact boxes—each containing different GOLS-certified latex foam layers and/or the cotton-and-wool cover. The layers are labeled by firmness, and depending on the height and firmness you choose, you may receive soft, medium, firm or extra-firm layers. You then stack them inside the cover in your preferred order and zip them in.
The Turmerry Organic Latex Mattress is offered in multiple firmness levels, including firm and extra-firm.
JAMES RANSOM FOR FORBES
How It Performed During Testing
One of our testers, who enjoyed stomach sleeping on the Turmerry, says, “My hips and lower back feel lifted and not like they are sagging into the bed at all.” Another adds, “This mattress is one of the firmer ones I’ve been on. It’s very supportive and dense, but it doesn’t feel rock-hard,” proving it doesn’t compromise on comfort for maximum support. That said, because the mattress lacks coils, its edge support leaves something to be desired. As for assembly, it took longer than expected, and we found the layers quite heavy and cumbersome. There’s no option for white-glove delivery, so keep in mind that setup here is entirely do-it-yourself.

Why We Named It Best Luxury
Saatva mattresses are made to order with high-quality materials that stand the test of time. The Zenhaven, in particular, has a flippable design—soft on one side, firm on the other—making it suitable for a variety of sleeping positions and ideal for those who want to try both. Dual-sided mattresses also tend to have a longer shelf life compared to standard beds since you can sleep on either side. Crafted with hypoallergenic cotton, New Zealand wool and GOLS-certified latex, this mattress is backed by Saatva’s lifetime warranty and 365-night trial, though you’re responsible for a $99 fee if you return it.

How It Performed During Testing
The majority of our team scored the Zenhaven a 9 out of 10 for side and back sleeping, and it averaged the same score for stomach sleeping. Its construction includes multiple zoned layers designed to either provide targeted lumbar support or cushion pressure points. Additionally, our testers scored it well for motion isolation (9 out of 10), so it absorbs movements from a partner or pet—preventing them from waking you up. They also found it’s extremely easy to move around on and features strong edge support—both key perks for combination sleepers and those with mobility issues or back pain.
The Nest Bedding Owl was a close runner-up for best luxury mattress because our testers loved its plush and ultra-comfortable feel, and it comes in three firmness levels. However, the Owl hasn’t earned the same reputable, third-party certifications as the Zenhaven.
Other Organic Mattresses We Considered
We tested over 20 organic mattresses to find the best options for this list. While the following models didn’t exceed the performance of our winners, they were top contenders during our selection process.
- Best For Back Pain Runner-Up: Coyuchi Natural REM Mattress: This is less bouncy than other organic latex mattresses we’ve tested (like the Avocado Green and Birch Natural), yet equally supportive. We found it to be most comfortable for back and stomach sleeping. One back-sleeping tester says, “I’ve been dealing with some hip and back pain the past few months, and this mattress helps ease the discomfort I feel in those areas while sitting and standing.”
- Best Luxury Runner-Up: PlushBeds Royal Bliss Luxury Mattress: Similar to the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss Organic Latex Mattress, this mattress feels luxurious with an overall thicker profile. However, it’s more expensive than the Botanical Bliss at $9,249 for a queen size which places it out of reach for most luxury shoppers.
How We Test The Best Organic Mattresses
When putting together this list, we personally tested and researched products from trusted mattress brands. Our initial filter was to ensure every mattress held the proper organic and/or natural materials, but that was just the start.
Our Process
- Expert insights: Our sleep editors are certified sleep science coaches, who have a combined decade of experience testing mattresses. They tapped into their years of expertise to compile a list of contenders for our panel testing process.
- Panel testing: We recruited a team of 13 individuals ranging in weight, height, preferred sleeping position and gender to test over a dozen organic mattresses and compare their features. This way, we could discover the nuances between each mattress and see which ones accommodated who.
Our Criteria
- Organic certifications and materials: We checked that each contender for our testing process holds organic or eco-conscious certifications from reputable third parties.
- Pressure relief and support: While testing each mattress, we laid in all three sleeping positions (side, back and stomach) and noted where we felt pressure buildup or relief. We also recorded whether we felt like we were sinking into the mattress or sitting on top of the bed during testing.
- Height and firmness: We took note of the height of each mattress, and how that impacted getting in and out of bed. Additionally, we lay on every contender to see if the brand’s firmness rating accurately represents the bed’s feel.
What To Consider When Shopping For The Best Organic Mattress
What Makes A Mattress Organic
An organic mattress is manufactured with natural materials that are produced in a way that meets reputable certification standards. This often means without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, among other criteria. They’re also more sustainable and renewable than conventional mattresses.
However, truly organic mattresses are quite rare. Many materials are marketed as natural or organic, but without proper certifications, they don’t meet the strict standards required to be considered genuinely organic. And even if the fabric or latex is certified, materials like metal coils or synthetic adhesives can’t be organic by definition—so most mattresses end up being a blend rather than fully organic. Below, we break down the organic materials to prioritize and how to vet them.
- Cotton is mostly used as a material for the mattress cover. It’s a popular fabric since it’s soft and breathable. Look for GOTS or similar third-party certifications to ensure it’s organic.
- Wool is another popular fiber in organic mattresses because it acts as a natural flame retardant that performs similarly to chemical sprays or fiberglass. It’s also breathable and helps regulate body temperature, making it a good choice for bedding. Like cotton, look for organic certifications, including GOTS, because not all wool is organic.
- Latex is often used in place of memory foam as a natural option in organic mattresses. However, synthetic latex does exist. If you’re set on buying an organic mattress, be sure the manufacturer is using natural or (even better) certified organic latex. Latex labeled “natural” means it came from a rubber tree, but it may not be certified organic.
Types Of Organic Mattresses
The most common types for organic mattresses are hybrid and latex. Here are the differences between the two:
Hybrid mattresses are the most popular option for organic beds. They offer a nice balance of pressure relief and support, because they have a cotton cover with layers of wool, latex and a base made of coils. You may also come across traditional hybrid mattresses while you shop; however, they’re typically made of memory foam, which is not an organic material, rather than natural latex.
Latex mattresses are all-foam beds that consist of natural latex. This material is derived from the sap of the rubber tree and can be processed to meet organic standards. The two main types of natural latex used in mattresses are Dunlop and Talalay, each with distinct sustainability profiles and firmness characteristics.
- Dunlop latex is the simpler and more traditional method. It’s denser, more energy-efficient to produce and can be GOLS certified, making it the top choice for organic mattresses. In terms of feel, Dunlop tends to be firmer and more supportive than Talalay.
- Talalay latex involves a more complex process that includes vacuum sealing, flash freezing and additional chemical steps. Because of this, no Talalay latex currently qualifies for GOLS certification, though some versions are Cradle to Cradle Gold certified for material health and sustainability. Although not as supportive as Dunlop, Talalay is softer and more buoyant, so it tends to offer better pressure relief.
Other Factors To Consider
- Firmness: Because organic mattresses use latex, they typically fall between medium-firm and firm. That said, you can still find a wide range of softer options if you look for thick pillow tops and additional wool layers for extra padding. As mentioned above, the types of latex also impacts the bed’s feel; Dunlop is generally firmer and more supportive than Talalay, although there are beds that use softer variations of Dunlop latex, too.
- Sleeping position: How you lie at night influences the type of mattress you should buy, and accommodating your sleep position is key to a good night’s rest. Side sleepers do best with a softer mattress to cushion their joints (especially their shoulders and hips). Meanwhile, stomach sleepers benefit from a firmer feel to keep their pelvis level with the rest of their body. Back sleepers should try a medium-firm mattress for a balance of comfort and support, a firmness that also suits combination sleepers.
- Price: Due to the high quality of materials used and the complex process of following compliance standards for third-party certifications, organic mattresses are typically more expensive than memory foam or innerspring beds. Even the least costly options fall into the upper-midrange price brackets. However, you can often save during mattress sales, which occur year-round. In particular, keep an eye out for markdowns during Cyber Week and long holiday weekends.
A Breakdown Of Organic Mattress Certifications
There are two main types of certifications when it comes to organic mattresses: Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS). Outside of GOLS and GOTS, there are a handful of other certifications you may come across when shopping for an organic mattress, which we broke down below. For more details, read our comprehensive mattress certification guide.
- Global Organic Textile Standard: This certification is the benchmark for organic cotton, wool and other fabrics. It ensures that mattresses labeled as “organic” have a minimum of 95% certified organic fibers.
- Global Organic Latex Standard: This certification applies to latex. It ensures that it contains at least 95% certified organic raw material. Like GOTS, it also requires that the bed be produced consciously from start to finish.
- Greenguard Gold: This certification ensures products meet strict chemical emission standards, making them suitable for sensitive environments like schools and healthcare facilities. It specifically limits over 360 volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
- Eco-Institut: This certification is awarded to products that are made without toxic chemicals. They’re also laboratory-tested for low pollutants and emissions.
- Oeko-Tex Standard 100: Mattresses with this certification are rigorously tested for harmful substances. Because Oeko-Tex updates its standards each year, certificates must be renewed annually.
- Made Safe: This certification covers everything from skincare to mattresses and bedding, and it certifies that a product avoids or limits the use of over 6,500 harmful substances.
- Rainforest Alliance: This certification ensures that natural latex used in mattresses is sourced from rubber plantations that follow sustainable agricultural practices. It promotes responsible land management, biodiversity conservation and fair treatment of workers. Certified latex must come from farms that do not contribute to deforestation or ecosystem destruction, and they must meet strict standards for environmental and social responsibility. Of all the mattresses on our list, only the Amerisleep Organica holds this certification.
- Fair Trade Certified: Mattresses with this certification, such as the Birch Natural, are made in factories that have sustainable practices, safe working conditions and fair wages.
- EWG Verified: Two mattresses on our list hold this certification, the Avocado Green and Naturepedic EOS Classic Customizable Organic Mattress. This means they’re made without harmful chemicals, such as fiberglass and certain flame retardants, and the brands disclose all the materials inside the mattress.
Here’s how our winners compare across the different types of organic certifications:
