Where to Buy Tickets to the Best Broadway Shows in NYC

There are a lot of options, both online and in person at the box office. Your options include purchasing tickets directly from the theatre’s website (or by calling the box office), using a popular reseller platform like Ticketmaster or buying from TodayTix.

If you’re a member, you may also want to purchase select shows from the Theater Development Fund (TDF). There are several ways to qualify for membership, which costs $35 with promo code JOIN35. After that, you have access to a plethora of Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, with prices running anywhere from $11-$59.50. The downside: Not every show is available and there’s no option for seat selection, so you won’t know where you’re sitting you arrive for the show.

Online ticket lotteries another option for some shows. They are reasonably priced if you win, but, with a few exceptions, you can only enter the day before for the next day’s showing. Winners are limited to either one or two tickets each.

Want to get your tickets in person? You can buy them directly from the show’s box office or get last-minute discounted tickets from TKTS. You’ll need to go to Times Square or Lincoln Center the day of the show to purchase tickets, which can be up to 50% off the regular price. Not every show is available. You can also purchase next-day discounted tickets for matinee performances at both locations.

If you’re on a budget, there are two other options for in-person tickets: rush or standing room only tickets. Several shows offer these specialty tickets, and you can get them by requesting them at the box office on the day of the performance. Box offices only hand out a select number each day—limit two per person—so it’s first-come, first-served. Standing room only tickets are generally only offered the day of if the show is already sold out.

When Do Broadway Show Tickets Go On Sale?

Since all shows run continuously on Broadway, tickets are on sale now. Typically, weekdays have better availability and if you’re buying your tickets online, try to get them sooner rather than later. You can also go directly to the box office for the show you want to see, either for a same-day show or one in advance. Going to the box office tends to be cheaper because you don’t have to pay online fees.

How Much Are Broadway Show Tickets?

The range of Broadway tickets can go from a mere $10—if you win the lottery for Hamilton—to four figures per ticket. Not including discounted ticket options, you’re likely to spend at least $80 on average per ticket. For pricier shows such as Hamilton, The Lion King and Wicked, that number is more like to be at least $100 per ticket. Typically, musicals cost more than plays.

Many factors go into this price, including how you get your ticket (online with fees vs. getting it directly from the box office without fees), where your seat is located in the theater (orchestra vs. mezzanine vs. balcony), the date and time you’re seeing a show (matinee vs. evening, weekday vs. weekend) and the view you will have of the stage (clear view vs. partial view). Make sure you pay special attention to which seats you’re planning on buying before checking out.
