Bandcamp Fridays are returning as a way for the platform to give back to artists. The platform says the promotion has resulted in millions of fans paying over $120 million directly to labels and musicians they love.
The Bandcamp Fridays promotion began in March 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic when closing venues left artists without vital touring revenue. The promotion was so successful during that time that the platform is reviving it for three more dates this year. The first is September 6 (today) with others happening on October 4 and December 6. Alongside the announcement, the company also offered some quick guidelines for making the most of Bandcamp Fridays.
Among the pro tips: post your music in the days before Bandcamp Friday, so it doesn’t get lost in the shuffle. Your music will already be featured in our search and discovery tools, and the viral nature of the fan community will be in full effect. Fans are on the lookout for special items including limited colorway vinyl, signed merch, warehouse finds, and one-off releases.
Bandcamp Fridays have also become a beacon for labels looking to raise awareness for causes or to raise money for charities.
Artists can also try using the ‘Name Your Price’ model on Bandcamp Fridays, when fans are feeling generous. Doing a big flash sale, or discounting your entire catalog are also ways in which to attract new fans looking to spend money on new music. Don’t forget to promote your music on social media and ask them to follow you on Bandcamp, so fans don’t miss out on special promotions.
“Bandcamp is once again waiving its revenue share on the first Friday of each month, giving 100% of sales directly to artists. This initiative, which originally began during the pandemic, has become a vital source of income for independent artists, helping them navigate the challenges of the music industry,” a Bandcamp spokesperson told Digital Music News.
