On Thursday, May 19, reconstruction works of the Brasa bridge began. The representatives of the management of the Riga City Council emphasize the importance of the reconstruction of this object, setting the main goal of completing the construction works in 2023.
The reconstruction of the Brasa bridge is an important event that has been awaited since May 2019, when the construction work was stopped due to the discovery of significant damage in the bridge’s load-bearing structures. As part of the modified construction project, a complete reconstruction of the bridge is carried out, rather than the renovation of an existing bridge.
“On May 10, 2022, the Cabinet of Ministers supported the granting of a loan for the reconstruction of the Brasa bridge. This is a confirmation that the cooperation of the Riga City Council with the government brings concrete results – the amount of the granted loan is more than 11 million euros. The reconstruction of the Brasa bridge and the completion of the repair work are eagerly awaited by the citizens of Riga and guests of the city. A lot of legal, technical and institutional work has been invested in order to resume the works with the aim of completing them in the summer season of 2023,” says Vilnis Ķirsis, Deputy Chairman of the Riga City Council for Traffic and Development.
The construction of the Brasa bridge is taking place gradually, so that during the works, residents can continue to use public transport. In such conditions, it is very important to follow the safety level, therefore the bridge is continuously evaluated for safety and dynamic fluctuations. When dangerous fluctuations are detected, the Bras bridge will be closed for public transport. Last year, one side of the Bras bridge was dismantled so that the other side could continue to be used by public transport. When the rebuilding of the Bras bridge is started, the dismantled side will be built first, and then the dismantling and construction will be done for the other side of the bridge.
“Currently, extensive work has been started so that even in difficult conditions in the construction industry, this infrastructure object in the capital will be safe, comfortable and accessible to all road users again by the 2023 Song and Dance Festival,” emphasizes Olafs Pulks, head of the Traffic and Transport Affairs Committee of the Riga City Council.
The cost of rebuilding the Brasa bridge is estimated at more than 13 million euros. In the distribution of costs – 85% of the amount is state budget funds, and the remaining 15% is municipal funds.
The reconstruction of the Brasa bridge will be carried out by the supplier association “CP – Rīgas tilti”, in which AS “Ceļu pārvalde” and SIA “Rīgas tilti” have merged, the construction supervision will be provided by the supplier association “KBL&ISL”.
