Investigation Discovery’s Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV docuseries explores Amanda Bynes relationship with her parents. After landing her breakout role on Nickelodeon’s The Amanda Show in 1999, the former actress had a falling out with her mom, Lynn Bynes, and dad, Rick Bynes. In the new doc, one of the speakers alleged that former producer Dan Schneider was allegedly involved in Amanda’s disconnection from her parents after she sought emancipation from them.

Who Are Amanda’s Mom and Dad?

In addition to their daughter Amanda, Lynn and Rick also share children Tom and Jillian. The parents were keen on keeping their family in Southern California amid Amanda’s growing entertainment career. During a 2007 appearance on Jay Leno‘s talk show, Amanda described her parents as “strict” while she was growing up, but “in a good way.”

“My parents actually were very strict, in a good way, though,” the former Nickelodeon star said. “I was never allowed to go to the mall alone or with friends. I had to go with my parents. … I think it was because shady things happen in malls.”

It’s unclear what Lynn did for work, but Amanda’s dad previously worked as a dentist. Before Amanda stepped away from acting in 2010, Lynn and Rick lived in Texas but relocated back to California to care for their daughter.

What Happened Between Amanda and Her Parents?

In the first episode of Quiet on Set, multiple speakers — most of whom were former Nickelodeon staffers and cast members — alleged that Dan was involved in Amanda’s running away from her parents. In the early 2000s, the then-teenage actress sought emancipation from her mother and father, but she later dismissed the petition. At the time, Amanda and Dan’s working relationship had grown closer, former network employees claimed in the docuseries. However, their professional relationship came to an abrupt end.

Amanda was placed under a psychiatric hold in 2013. As a result, Lynn was granted a temporary conservatorship. Less than a decade later, the family agreed to end the conservatorship in 2022.

Nickelodeon responded to the claims in Quiet on Set in a statement obtained by Hollywood Life.

“Though we cannot corroborate or negate allegations of behaviors from productions decades ago, Nickelodeon as a matter of policy investigates all formal complaints as part of our commitment to fostering a safe and professional workplace environment free of harassment or other kinds of inappropriate conduct,” the statement read. “Our highest priorities are the well-being and best interests not just of our employees, casts and crew, but of all children, and we have adopted numerous safeguards over the years to help ensure we are living up to our own high standards and the expectations of our audience.”

Where Is Amanda Bynes Now?

Before ending her conservatorship in 2022, Amanda received her associate’s degree from Los Angeles’ Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. She was later engaged to her ex Paul Michael in 2020, but the pair called it quits in 2022.

In late 2023, Amanda updated her fans on social media that she was working on starting a podcast. Additionally, she revealed that she opted to get cosmetic surgery.
