LATVIA,RIGA – The Traffic Department of the Riga City Council informs that this week they will start work on the introduction of a 30 km/h speed limit zone in the vicinity of the Center.
The speed limit zone will be introduced in the Center in the area between Brīvības, Tallinas, Aleksandra Čaks, Marijas, and Merķelas streets. Installation of the signs will begin on Thursday, April 13, and is scheduled to be completed within weeks. Riga municipality calls on drivers to be attentive and take into account the new traffic organization changes.
30 km/h speed limit zones are implemented taking into account several factors affecting traffic safety. For example, the congestion of streets with stationary traffic, the width of roadways and sidewalks, the presence of educational institutions, the visibility of intersections and curves, the intensity of vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, as well as other aspects.
Speed limit zones of 30 km/h in the vicinity of Riga are gradually introduced from 2020, when such a zone was established in the vicinity of Āgenskalns. The speed limit zone was introduced in the vicinity of Grīziņkalns and two places in the vicinity of Klusā centra in 2021, while in the vicinity of Čiekurkalns it was done last year. This year, restrictions have already been introduced in the section of Upesciema Street from the Riga border to Bergu Street, in the area between Buļļi Street, Saulgožu Street (including), Slokas and Dzirciema Street, as well as in Sarkandaugava. Also in the future, 30 km/h speed limit zones will continue to be introduced in various Riga neighborhoods.
