For those looking to sign up for their first wine subscription, Firstleaf is a popular service that’s affordable and user-friendly. To start, you take a quick-but-thorough quiz about your wine preferences, and you can easily customize and “edit” your mix, choosing between whites and reds, picking specific regions you’d like to try and more. And while the wines are algorithmically curated, customers’ ratings play a big part in further tailoring each month’s picks. Introductory orders of six wines are $44.95; after that, it costs around $90 for the monthly delivery.

Getting to try a new bottle or two is always a nice perk, but if what you’re after is more of a bona fide wine education, opt for Wine Access. There are several different options offered, but we’d suggest trying either the Connoisseurs (all reds) or Discovery boxes (reds, whites or mixed), which will treat you to two luxury bottles or six classic bottles, respectively. The “climate-controlled” shipping is another big differentiator here—it’ll keep the wine tasting the way it’s supposed to—and as we mentioned, the educational materials included within each shipment are our favorite part. Sonoma-based Iron Horse is known for making some of California’s most exquisite sparkling wines, and their Winemakers’ Choice Club (Sparkling Only) is an excellent opportunity to sample their best bottles.
