On December 19, 2021, “Amber”, a breeding bitch of the German Shepherd breed of the State Border Guard College, gave birth to a litter of puppies. Seven puppies were born in the litter – six bitches and one dog. Next week it will be one month for the puppies to have their puppy identification, ie. chip entry and selected words.
The main task of the Canine Service of the State Border Guard College is the training of canines and service dogs of the State Border Guard, as well as breeding work, providing the State Border Guard with puppies. “After about two years, the puppies will start to perform official duties at the state border, but first the puppies will be tested and trained. Each dog is trained for a specific specialization – searching for people, narcotics or explosives,” comments Uldis Barkāns, head of the Canine Department of the State Border Guard College.
The puppies will be distributed among the territorial administrations of the State Border Guard or they will be assigned to cadets who plan to become canine experts after graduating from the professional further education program “Border Guard”.
