For a simple, quality beach canopy that’s easy to install in minutes and big enough for the whole family, the Sun Ninja ticks all the boxes. Crafted with water-resistant fabric that provides UPF 50+ protection, the design can be erected on the beach using sand or rocks to fill the anchor points at each corner. Once weighed down, stability poles secure into the fabric and extend upwards, creating an open, airy space with plenty of shade.

Unlike traditional beach canopies that feature anchors at the corners, Kelty’s Noah’s Tarp uses a combination of poles and guylines to raise the perfect shaded environment. And because the canopy doesn’t require sand or rocks to anchor it down, the tarp can be used beyond the beach (think: local park or campground), which is why it receives such high marks for value. While the polyester material might feel thin and fragile, it’s taped at the seams and coated to keep water out, be it rain or beach spray.

It’s worth noting the tarp comes in three sizes, with a smaller 9-foot option, a larger 16-foot option and a 12-foot model seen here. We recommend choosing the one that accommodates your group size and the equipment you intend to bring, but if you’re unsure of which one to get, opt for the 12-foot model. While the Shibumi Shade Classic may cost a bit more, it delivers on every front. Suitable for up to six people with 150 square feet of shaded space, the roomy canopy is not only easy to set up (it comes with easy-to-follow instructions), but lightweight as well at only 4 pounds. Plus, it offers UPF 50+ sun protection against harmful rays, so as long as you’re in its shade, the sun won’t pose a problem. It’s also a bit easier on the environment thanks to a materials composition that includes 40% ocean-bound recycled plastic bottles. 

The design is a little different from other canopies in that it’s rooted down with two aluminum poles and a sand bag at the front, while the open-ended rear portion of the shade flies securely in the wind for constant coverage. That means you’ll need at least a light breeze to ensure the tarp provides adequate shade, but that shouldn’t pose a problem by the ocean.

Shibumi also makes a miniature version for two that offers 75 square feet of shade, though it’s a bit pricey at $190. For that reason, we recommend opting for the full-size shade instead.
