Just as important as sight, touch, sound, and taste, the scent on board a superyacht helps to set the tone for the voyage, enhancing all other senses. Some estimates put human detection of different scents at around a trillion, but really, it only takes one to ruin an otherwise beautiful cruising itinerary.
From pleasant scenting with just a hint of aromatics through dispersion of essential oils, to needlepoint ionization technology and deep cleaning, there are many options to address olfactory offenses. Here are three ways to improve the scent on any superyacht.
Essential Oil Dispersion: Nature’s Bouquet Sets The Mood
Pure essential oils, dispersed through diffusers, portable machines, or attachments to the entire HVAC system, use natural scents to evoke calm, relieve stress, invigorate, or even cheer guests. Diffusing the right scent at the right time can be a welcome amenity.
Brisk, citrusy scents in the morning can help guests to awaken and greet the day. Soothing sandalwood or lavender can help guests to wind down at the end of the day, preparing for sleep. Other scents can link to memories, helping guests remember pleasant events or travels via olfactory recall linked to receptors in the brain.
Lonnie Kuenzli, Founder and CEO of Aura Scenting, provides scenting solutions for superyachts. Kuenzli explains that his company offers high quality, farm-produced, whole essential oils for their superyacht scents. Lower quality, synthetic versions of the natural essential oils may have similar aromas that suggest the real thing, but they often lack the depth and variation of the natural versions. Additionally, some of the benefits enjoyed from natural essential oils are not delivered by their synthetic counterparts.
Aura combines top of industry technology with full customization of scents, offering an option to create a unique olfactory signature for each yacht, tailored to the owner’s preferences. Kuenzli states that whole essential oil scents offer a “unique luxury experience that enhances the atmosphere of these magnificent vessels.”
The Aura Scenting diffusers turn the oils into a dry nano-mist. Using no heat or water, the diffusers preserve the therapeutic properties of the oils. Their systems are easy to install and maintain, ensuring the onboard air is as pleasing as the yacht itself.

Clean Air Through Ionization: Efficient And Ozone Free
Ionization technology uses water vapor from the air to create charged ions. Those ions then break down odors and VOCs, Volatile Organic Compounds, at the molecular level. Pathogens and mold spores are reduced as the ions attack their core structures.
The Dometic Breathe Ionizer system operates on those same principles, and is beneficial for the reduction of allergens, viruses, bacteria, and pollutants while reducing pathogens, mold, and odors.
Using bipolar ionization, the Breathe Ionizer creates both positively and negatively charged ions using moisture from the air. As the air moves through ductwork and into the yacht’s living space, the ions attack bacteria, viruses, and mold by breaking down their structures at the molecular level, stripping off essential molecules needed to survive.
Those charged particles and the ions are attracted to each other, joining together to make larger, heavier particles that either drop out of the air to be cleaned from surfaces, or get filtered out through the HVAC system. Finally, the ions break down the VOCs reducing odors from chemicals or waste. A simpler, less expensive alternative to UV light and HEPA filters, the system is easy to install anywhere in the airstream.

Deep Cleaning: Pipes, Drains, Sinks, And HVAC Systems
To really make sure everything is shipshape, a thorough cleaning of black and grey water lines might be the right choice. Slow drains and clogged lines can harbor bacteria and biofilms, causing health issues and downtime as well as unpleasant aromas.
Marinevac’s Puracator is a machine designed to prevent blockages, keep drains clean and keep lines infection-free without dismantling pipework. The Puracator washes out pipes with a pressured ring of 50° C water at five bar, dismantling obstructions and biofilms without damaging joints or fittings. Then, the Puracator introduces products that clean and inhibit harmful bacterial growth, and dissolving agents to remove grease, fats, and salts. An optional biocide treatment can then be applied to discourage future growth in the pipework. Cleaned pipework looks as good as new.
Marinevac offers service in Spain, France, Holland, Germany, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Croatia, Turkey, Montenegro, Florida, Malta, Australia, and Southeast Asia, with headquarters in Palma de Mallorca.
Put these suggestions into practice so the next time a guest asks, “What’s that smell?” you can rest assured the answer will be something very pleasant.
