The Recording Academy adds Billy Joel to the performance lineup for the 2024 Grammy Awards.
On Wednesday, January 24, the Recording Academy revealed that the Piano Man himself, Billy Joel, will perform at the 66th Grammy Awards. The show kicks off at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on February 4, with performances from artists including Billie Eilish, Burna Boy, Dua Lipa, Luke Combs, Olivia Rodrigo, and Travis Scott. More performers are said to be announced soon.
The news comes on the heels of the 74-year-old Joel announcing the upcoming release of “Turn the Lights Back On,” his first new single in nearly two decades. The music legend revealed on Monday that new music was on the way, sharing a teaser on social media that unveiled the track’s title and its release date of February 1.
The song will be the first new music from the singer-songwriter since 2007’s “All My Life,” though he has released some classical piano covers and some collaborations with artists including Cass Dillon. Joel had all but retired from songwriting following the release of his 1993 album, River of Dreams.
Despite his songwriting hiatus, Joel has continually performed live over the last thirty years, with international tours and a decade-long residency at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Joel will play his final show in the series on July 25 — his 150th lifetime show at the venue and the 100th in his residency.
This year’s Grammy nominations are led by superstar SZA, with nine in total; she is followed by Phoebe Bridgers and Victoria Monét, who each have seven nods. Jack Antonoff, Jon Batiste, boygenius, Brandy Clark, Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, and Taylor Swift have each received six.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be hosted by Trevor Noah for the fourth consecutive year, and will broadcast live on the CBS television network, and live and on demand on Paramount+ on February 4 at 5 PM PT / 8 PM ET.
