Fortnite’s New Chapter 5 Locker UI Is Terrible

Epic

While there’s a lot to like about Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 1, new map, gun attachments, Peter Griffin, there’s one new addition to the game that everyone seems to hate. That would be significant changes Epic has made to the locker UI, a system for selecting, organizing and favoriting your skins that has been heavily overhauled as of this chapter, and players are not loving.

What’s wrong with the new Fortnite locker UI? Where to start

  • The rarity of items is now heavily hidden which was not previously the case. You now have to scroll over each individual skin to see it.
  • Many presets were either deleted or things are now missing from them.
  • Even finding the preset section is weird as it’s below each individual skin setup and you have to click on it to scroll down in a strange way (mouse wheel doesn’t work on PC)
  • You now have seven different tabs for each skin that must be set up. Only the basics are on the first page, and you set up everything from wraps to lobby music and wallpaper for new loadouts. Much more convoluted.
  • Many PC shortcuts appear to be gone, and it’s harder to favorite skins now as you much go to each skin, hit options, then hit set as favorite. The menus are bizarre like scrolling through categories under Character right to left like the image below:

  • You can no longer autoclear new item notifications and must do them all manually.
  • It has undone a bunch of organization a lot of players had already done with their outfits.
  • It also just…looks worse. Fonts, background, menus, character tile screens, all of it.

This is one of those changes that seems to have mainly been made just for the sake of change itself. There may be some positive additions here if you really do want to do things like separate out emotes for each character, but this seems like it was mostly done for new cosmetic additions and some sort of misguided attempt to maybe streamline the main selection page, but instead it’s made everyone more convoluted, confusing and often inserted a bunch more additional steps.

It’s about as “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” as you can get here. It seems unlikely Epic will revert this to the old locker setup completely, but with all this feedback I would be surprised if they did not address some of the most common paint points that are really obvious to players. I’ll admit it took me a lot longer than I would have thought to even figure out something basic like where presets even went in the first place. Then as I explored, I saw that it really only got worse from there.
