D.C. police said a 17-year-old boy was injured in a targeted shooting Friday morning as the student was walking to a high school in Northeast.
Metropolitan Police Assistant Chief Andre Wright said the boy, who wasn’t identified, was shot in the calf around 10:30 a.m. Friday near the KIPP College Prep High School in the 1400 block of Brentwood Parkway NE.
Chief Wright said that a white, four-door sedan was following the teen victim as the boy walked to school.
An unknown number of occupants then opened fire on the teen victim at an intersection near KIPP’s campus. Authorities said they found 14 shell casings at the scene.
Police said the boy sought refuge inside the school before receiving medical treatment.
Chief Wright said the teen was targeted, but added that police haven’t established a motive at this time.
“This is obviously too close to home — this is too close to school,” Chief Wright said.
“Whatever’s precipitating these beefs, these arguments that then escalate and introduce a gun into the equation, I will say to parents and community: Talk to young folks and then reach out to the police department and let us know what’s going on so that we could get out in front of this,” the chief said.
Police are still trying to determine how many suspects were involved in the shooting.
In May, an 18-year-old student was wounded in a shooting near KIPP College Prep High School.
