Even his Republican comrades are tiring of George Santos.
Rep. Anthony D’Esposito introduced an expulsion resolution against his fellow New Yorker one day before Mr. Santos is expected to plead not guilty to federal charges of stealing campaign donors’ identities and credit card information.
According to a CBS News report, Mr. D’Esposito introduced a privileged resolution on which the chamber must act on the measure within two legislative days.
Chances are long though — the Constitution requires a two-thirds majority for either house of Congress to expel a member and it has only happened five times since the start of the Civil War.
Democrats made an effort to expel Mr. Santos in May, but then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy referred the matter instead to the House ethics committee on the grounds that courts should decide the legal and factual issues first.
Mr. D’Esposito said at the time of that vote that Mr. Santos “is a stain on this institution, a stain on the state of New York, a stain on Long Island and a stain on the beloved Nassau County.”
However, he backed sending the matter then to the ethics panel “to ensure a thorough and expedient investigation into this matter. I firmly believe this is the quickest way of ridding the House of Representatives of this scourge on government.”
