The Toronto Film Festival and Sony Music Entertainment announce ‘Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero,’ a documentary about the artist, to make its world premiere next month at the festival.

Sony Music Entertainment and the Toronto Film Festival officially announced that a documentary about rapper Lil Nas X filmed over 60 days during the Grammy winner’s first global tour, will make its world premiere at the festival next month. “Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero” is a diaristic and intimate portrait of an artist on tour as he navigates identity, family, expectations, and acceptance while reflecting on his newfound place in the legacy of Black, queer performers.

Co-directed by Carlos López Estrada and Zac Manuel, the film will appear in the Gala program of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), running September 7-17. RadicalMedia produced the movie with Sony Music Entertainment’s Premium Content Division, Columbia Records, and Museum & Crane.

“‘Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero’ is a triumphant ode to the extraordinary power of self-expression, music, and identity,” said TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey. “In this groundbreaking documentary, we witness Lil Nas X challenging boundaries and reshaping the artistic landscape. The film’s captivating journey underscores the profound impact of Lil Nas X, who fearlessly brings audiences together through the universal language of music. We are thrilled to host Lil Nas X at TIFF this year.”

Produced by RadicalMedia with Dave Sirulnick and Caryn Capotosto for Museum & Crane, Saul Levitz is also a producer for Sony Music, with Adam Leber and Adrianna Arce for Rebel and Gee Roberson for BPG/Maverick. Meredith Bennett, Jon Kamen, and Frank Scherma serve as executive producers for RadicalMedia, while Tom Mackay and Krista Wegener are executive producers for Sony Music, with Wegener leading global sales.

Lil Nas X’s five-time platinum hit “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” released in March 2021, an LGBTQ+ anthem that debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. His debut album, “MONTERO,” was released in September 2021.
