In Riga, it is planned to update the rules for registering and enrolling children in 1st grade

LATVIA – The Riga municipality plans to update the binding regulations on the registration and admission of children to the 1st grade, which will come into force after September 1, 2023.

The draft of Riga City Council’s binding regulations on registering and enrolling children in 1st grade has been published on the city council’s website https://www.riga.lv/lv/saistoso-noteikumu-projekti

In order for the local government to learn about citizens’ suggestions and proposals, everyone is invited to familiarize themselves with the draft of the binding regulations by February 24 of this year and express their opinion by participating in the public discussion of the regulations. The questionnaire on residents’ suggestions and proposals in the draft binding regulations is available on the website indicated above.

“Riga cares about Riga residents! Therefore, we have prepared proposals on how to improve the opportunities of young Riga residents to get quality education when choosing a school. In order to improve the proposals and receive the evaluation of Riga residents on them, a public discussion is started, in which everyone is welcome to participate – parents, grandparents, teachers and students themselves,” says Laima Geikina, the chairperson of the Education, Culture and Sports Committee of the Riga City Council.

Taking into account the provisions of the Law on Education regarding the gradual transition over the course of three school years to studies in the national language in schools that implement the primary education minority program, the annex of the draft binding regulations lists the schools where, from September 1, 2023, studies in the 1st grade will begin in the national language.

Also, in the draft of the binding regulations, it is planned to update the priority order for the admission of children in the 1st grade, for example, priority will be given to children who, together with their parents, have declared for the longest time in the territory attached to the school, a brother or sister is already studying in the basic education program at this school, as well as to the children of pedagogues of the respective schools. It is planned to apply the new priority sequence for the admission of children to the 1st grade in Riga schools after September 1, 2023.
