Kuromi made her debut not in Sanrio‘s own character goods line, but in the television anime Onegai My Melody in April 2005. She gradually became a popular character in her own right, charting in the top 5 in the Sanrio Character Ranking poll in the last six years in a row. She already starred in two series of Kuromi’s Pretty Journey anime shorts in 2023 and 2024, as well as a stop-motion anime My Melody & Kuromi on Netflix in July 2025.
