Fallout 76 is finally getting native PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions with improved graphics and performance, but Bethesda needs to test them first

Fallout 76 has had quite the evolution over the years, slowly but steadily going from a “broken mess” to becoming what is essentially seen as ‘Fallout Online‘, complete with proper questlines and wandering friendly NPCs. Despite all the new content and improvements, however, players were still waiting for proper PS5 and Xbox Series X/S upgrades, and finally, they’re almost ready to go.

As a side item on yesterday’s Fallout 76: Infestations (a new content update) patch notes, it was confirmed June would mark the beginning of public testing of the current-gen versions of Fallout 76. “Available to everyone who owns Fallout 76,” players just need to download them from the respective stores.

The plan is to release the final update “later this summer” if testing is completed with no major issues. The list of features isn’t long, but it includes everything you’d want out of a current-gen upgrade: 60 FPS targets, better draw distances and shadows, 4K resolution on Xbox Series X, Xbox One X and PS5 Pro, and Variable Refresh Rate on compatible displays. Oddly enough, the base PS5 is limited to 1440p output resolution, same as PS4 Pro. It’s also implied Series S will have to stick to 1080p, similarly to base last-generation consoles.

Nothing has been mentioned about how saves may or may not be affected, but we’re guessing veterans will be able to load up their current characters just fine, as the game’s insides aren’t being changed to accommodate these new versions. As for the long-awaited crossplay feature, we know Bethesda has been “looking into it“, but nothing has been locked yet.

Following the arrival and ongoing success of the Fallout TV show, the video game franchise has experienced a major boost in popularity. In the case of Fallout 76, tie-in content drops have been made available, but no new Fallout games have been formally announced since Amazon premiered the hit series. What about the rumoured Fallout 3 remaster? That would do nicely, if you ask me.
