5 tips on how to live more planet-friendly next year

Thoughtful purchases, ecological and healthy food, energy-efficient housing and giving a “second breath” to things that have served their time – these are some of the habits that inspiring Latvian people have already implemented in their everyday life in order to live more friendly to nature and the planet. Environmentalists encourage everyone to evaluate their daily habits in order to leave as small an ecological footprint as possible on our planet in the future.

  1. For a healthy diet and less waste

A healthy diet is very important to TV personality Anna Rozīte, and in order not to consume countless plastic or cardboard cups on a daily basis, she always has a thermos mug and a bottle with her to fill with an invigorating drink on the way from one activity to another in one of her favorite cafes. She reveals that at the beginning she had to think more to always remember to put a cup in her bag, but now she has developed a scheme – when she comes home, she puts her bottles and cups in a visible place in the corridor so that she doesn’t forget to take them when she leaves.

  1. Exchange places – get something useful for you in exchange for another

At the “Brivbode” exchange and meeting place, it is possible to get something useful for the household for free. You can receive it if you bring in return some of your good and high-quality belongings, which you no longer need, but which will be useful for someone else – for example, clothes, toys, sports equipment, dishes, books, magazines, work tools, etc. Jana Purmale, a multi-artist, also works as a volunteer at “Brivbode”.

  1. Teach to fix things instead of throwing them away

Dagnis Zviedris is an IT specialist who represents the global community “Repair Cafe”, which fights to ensure that people do not lose the ability and right to repair their purchased items themselves. His hobby is repairing things and also teaching others how to fix torn things themselves. With this, he wants to show others how we can think bigger and do more to save as many things as possible that end up in recycling or trash. “It’s greener to use the thing to the end, and if you can’t, then give it to someone else, and only then send it for recycling,” explains Dagnis.

  1. Life force – idle in the city

Spring is no longer behind the mountains and local creator Una Meiberg encourages growing healthy and strengthening sprouts in the city as well. “Watch, run and then eat! There are minerals, enzymes, vitamins, chlorophyll, which are good for health and immunity, give a lot of energy,” explains Una. To be sure that the sprouts will really be healthy and give energy, seeds from organic farms should be used for germination – preferably from local farmers. On the other hand, seeds that do not grow in Latvia, such as lentils or mung beans, can simply be bought in an organic store. Germination methods are very different – it can be done in special devices, in ordinary glass jars, on gauze or on cotton wool, while Una prefers “Muhamors” clay pots with a lid.
